HERRIMAN, Utah (Tuesday, March 29, 2021) – In conjunction with the USL Championship, Real Monarchs announced its full 32-game regular-season schedule for the 2021 season. The Monarchs kick off its season at San Antonio FC on Saturday, May 8 before returning home for its home opener against LA Galaxy II on Friday, May 14. All of the Monarchs home matches will be available to stream via the KSLTV app.
This year the USL Championship has broken its teams into divisions, with Real Monarchs falling into the Mountain Division with Austin Bold FC, Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, El Paso Locomotive FC, New Mexico United, Rio Grande Valley FC and San Antonio FC. The Monarchs will face each opponent in their division four times, two away and two at home.
The schedule features eight non-division matches, including the home opener against LA Galaxy II on Friday, May 14. Notable games include a home matchup against former head coach Mark Briggs and Sacramento Republic on Wednesday, June 9 and a road match against San Diego Loyal and former captain Jack Blake on Saturday, August 7. The team will also play Hartford Athletic, Tacoma Defiance, Las Vegas Lights, Indy Eleven and New York Red Bulls II. The matches against Hartford, Indy Eleven and New York will signify the first-regular season contests against Eastern Conference opposition since the team’s visit to Tampa Bay Rowdies in April 2018.
Real Monarchs will close out their regular season at home when they host RGV FC Toros on Wednesday, October 27 before finishing the year on the road against New Mexico United on Saturday, October 30.
The Monarchs return just three players from the 2020 squad with goalkeeper Jimmy Slayton, midfielder Sam Brown and long-time defender James Moberg establishing the veteran core.
This offseason the front office was hard at work, signing eight new players, six of which have never played in the U.S. and seven of whom have international tags. Defender Kyle Adams and forward Max Mata represent the New Zealand contingency, while the trio of midfielder Brayan Gomez, defender Kevin Saucedo and forward Juan Vidal all hail from Colombia. Chelsea FC Academy product Josimar Quintero is from Ecuador and forward Malik Johnson comes to Utah from Canada.
The addition of RSL Academy product Julio Benitez earlier this month marks the youngest player to ever sign with the Real Monarchs.
The club is working on safety protocols and stadium capacity limits with the USL Championship and local health officials to ensure the highest standard of safety. Season ticket members will be emailed once details are finalized to receive first priority on any reduced capacity matches this season. For more information on season ticket memberships click here.
