Man of the Match: Tyrone Mondi scored his first goals of the season, netting a brace in the first half. The first goal came in the seventh minute after the Real Monarchs’ high press forced a turnover, allowing Pierre Reedy to send the ball into the middle to Mondi, who cut to his right foot before firing a shot into the back of the net. Mondi’s second goal came in the 25th minute after he beat both SKC center backs in a foot race before slotting it between the goalkeeper’s legs for the brace. Mondi also led the team in shots and shots on target with five and two, respectively.
Telling Stat: In his second start this season, Mondi’s brace in the first half marked his first two goals in MLS NEXT Pro play. His goals were also the first two scored by the Monarchs in the first 45 minutes this season.The only other Monarchs players to score this season are Pedro Fonseca who leads the team with four and Bobby Pierre who has netted one.
What You Missed: Defender Aziz Kayondo made his Real Monarchs and MLS NEXT Pro debut in the starting lineup. Meanwhile, Tyrone Mondi scored a brace in the first half, but it wasn’t enough to defeat Sporting Kansas City II as they fell 4-2 to the home side at Rock Chalk Park.
What’s Next: Real Monarchs will head on the road to face Pacific Division rival Tacoma Defiance on May 15 with kickoff at 8:00 p.m. MT. This will be the second matchup between the teams with Tacoma winning the first match 4-0 in the first match of the season.
