Mulholland's Stunning Volley Up for Goal of the Week

Real Salt Lake has struggled to find the back of the net of late with just three goals in the last six matches.  However, Luke Mulholland’s second-half goal on Friday to earn a comeback draw against the San Jose Earthquakes was a thing to behold, not just for his precision in blasting the left-footed volley past the otherwise impenetrable David Bingham, but also for the cunning ball from Javier Morales that set up the equalizer.

That goal is among the eight goals selected for AT&T Goal of the Week this week, and for good reason.

“Great pass from Javier. You guys have seen him for plenty of seasons. He can make those passes every day in his sleep,” Mulholland said after the match.  “Like I said before, I was trying to get up the field, especially in the second half as much as possible.  Obviously weighing the risk-reward with Kyle covering me at times.  So I could make that late run in the box and that was a great ball from him to me.”

The goal was Mulholland’s third of the season.  Coupled with his two assists, he has already matched his scoring output from 2015 and now has 12 goals and 11 assists in his three seasons with Real Salt Lake, moving him into a tie for 11th on the club’s all-time scoring list with Jamison Olave.

Real Salt Lake has now earned 15 points this season when coming from behind in the match and a key to it was the 80th career assist from Javier Morales, which puts him in a tie for tenth on the league’s all-time assist list with Mauricio Cienfuegos and Chris Henderson.

“I think the final pass from Javi on that goal was fantastic,” RSL Head Coach Jeff Cassar said. “That is what it takes to break down a team that is playing a lot of good defense, especially at home.”
